Awareness is a family thing.

Looking at Risk Factors

At SODA, we like to think of risk factors for drug use in the same way we think of risks associated with hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, or any other debilitating illnesses. So, reducing the risk factors can help prevent a problem from occurring. Education and knowledge of these risk factors are the beginning of prevention. The following are research based predictors for the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs:

  • Family history of alcoholism
  • Parental drug use and positive attitudes towards drug use
  • Family management problems
  • Conduct disorders, rebelliousness, and antisocial behavior
  • Academic failure and poor school performance
  • Little commitment to school
  • Friends who use drugs
  • Favorable attitudes toward drug use
  • Starting drug use at an early age
